COVID Policies Renters Want Apartments to Keep

The advent of COVID-19 has brought about the need to move many traditional procedures into the digital age to protect landlords and residents’ health and safety. For some, navigating these new policies requires adjusting to a modern-age learning curve, but, this new reality is a plus for many renters.

From a resident’s point of view, the ability to perform routine procedures from a distance would greatly enhance the quality of life. Think of the convenience! Even after the threat of Coronavirus has dissipated (hopefully soon), residents across the country will still be interested in maintaining a digital approach. Meetings, classes, interviews and more are now moving to virtual platforms. Why not the ins and outs of renting?

Virtual Tours

The average applicant wants to see their future living space before committing to a lease. In the past, that meant getting in touch with the rental property owner or property manager, choosing a date and time that worked for both parties, and blocking off the time to actually go and see the apartment.

Now with technology, it’s possible to preview the options from the comfort of your own home. Apartments have been offering virtual tours, and many potential residents would like to make that a standard. Not only do they solve the challenge of keeping a distance and sanitizing after each visit, but it can also take what used to be an evening event and make it a five-minute browse. Virtual tour apps are available to make this process an easy reality.

“After recently taking an in-person tour, I very much see the need for making more virtual tours available,” says resident Rena Gray of Atlanta, GA. “My husband had to leave work early, the masks made it hard to communicate, and we had to dance awkwardly around each other as we went from room to room.”

Don’t Drop By Unannounced

After potential applicants have completed their virtual tour, why not seal the deal by allowing them to complete the rest of the paperwork online? There are countless choices of programs out there that enable applicants to apply for the apartment, complete a background check and even e-sign the lease when it’s all said and done.

You save paper, save time, and, from the renter’s perspective, make it too easy not to get it done.

“In my old building, they didn’t have any sort of online system, so I had to physically mail a check in every month,” says renter Shayna Weinberg-Gordon of New York City. “My new building is much more tech-savvy and I’m so grateful that during this pandemic, I didn’t have to worry about making sure I had checks, stamps, envelopes, etc.”

Checks can get lost, bounce or get forgotten about. Instituting online rent pay negates these issues, and renters can also choose to set up recurring payments or digital reminders. This way, everyone wins.

We don’t know how much longer our new normal of heightened safety precautions will need to remain in effect. What we do know, however, is that there are tremendous benefits to moving basic renting procedures to the world of the web. Let’s click our mice in salute to a safer, more convenient future.
